Sam O'Brien delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score
Jordan King with the game-winning run to help Wayne State College salvage a split in Northern Sun Conference softball played Sunday at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. The visiting Huskies won the opener 3-2 with Wayne State using O'Brien's heroics to win the second game 2-1. WSC is now 27-17 and 12-10 in league play with St. Cloud State 24-22 and 10-12 in the NSIC.
The opener saw St. Cloud State right hander Kelly Franks strike out nine Wildcat batters as the Huskies edged Wayne State 3-2.
St. Cloud State scored two runs in the top of the first, but WSC got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first when
Lexie Loos tripled and scored on a
Jordan King groundout.
After the Huskies took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth, WSC countered again in the bottom of the fourth as
Kaiti Williams tripled down the left field line and scored on a passed ball to get the 'Cats within one at 3-2.
WSC threatened to tie the score in each of the next three innings, but left runners on second and third in the fifth and sixth innings and had two hits in the bottom of the seventh to leave two more runners on base in the 3-2 loss.
Wayne State had seven hits in the game to six for SCSU. Williams was 2 for 4 with a triple and one run scored. Loos tripled and was 1 for 3 with a run scored. King,
Kelcie Bormann,
Melanie Alyea and
Alex Schmidt each singled.
Senior
Sara Scheffert (5-6) suffered the pitching loss, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings with five walks and two strikeouts. Junior reliever
Cassy Miller worked the final two innings and struck out four of the six batters she faces.
The second game saw Wayne State mount a two-out rally with no runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up the 2-1 win.
WSC opened the scoring in the first inning when Loos singled and scored on a
Kaiti Williams single for a 1-0 lead. The run scored by Loos was her 46
th of the season, breaking the single season runs scored mark previously held by Amy Sandstrom (45) in the 2009 season.
St. Cloud State tied the score with one run in the top of the second and the score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh.
After the first two Wildcat batters were retired in the bottom of the seventh, King drew a two out walk. Williams then singled up the middle and Bormann walked to load the bases. O'Brien then singled up the middle for the game-winning run scored by King to give WSC the 2-1 win.
WSC had seven hits in the win to just four by SCSU. Williams finished 3 for 3 with three singles and an RBI. Loos, King, Bormann and O'Brien also had hits for the Wildcats.
Senior
Kelcie Bormann fired a complete game win improving to 14-8 on the season. She struck out four and allowed just four hits and one unearned run.
Wayne State will host Minnesota Duluth in a NSIC doubleheader Monday at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex starting at 12 p.m.
