Sara Scheffert struck out 10 batters in a complete game win in the opener while junior outfielder
Lexie Loos became the single season hits record for a Wayne State softball player Monday to help Wayne State College sweep Minnesota Duluth 8-4 and 8-1 in Northern Sun Conference softball Monday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. WSC improves to 29-17 and 14-10 in the NSIC while dropping UMD to 27-20 and 11-13 in league play.
The opener saw Loos go 3 for 4 to become the single season hits leader at WSC while Scheffert struck out 10 batters in just her third complete game of the season as the Wildcats knocked off the Bulldogs 8-4.
WSC scored two runs in the first thanks to a
Kaiti Williams double and a sacrifice fly by
Melanie Alyea.
After UMD took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second, the Wildcats posted five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Williams had a two-run homer while
Jordan King produced a two-run single for big hits in the inning.
WSC took a 8-3 lead in the fifth inning on a
Lexie Loos RBI single with UMD scoring in the top of the sixth to close out the scoring in the 8-4 Wildcat win.
Both teams had 12 hits in the contest. Loos finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and broke the single season hits record of 77 previously held by Amy Sandstrom in the 2009 season. Loos also accomplished the feat in 60 fewer at bats and now has 80 hits on the season. Williams was 2 for 4 with a homer, double and three RBI's.
Kelcie Bormann and
Jordan King each added two hits for WSC.
Sara Scheffert improved to 6-6 on the season with her complete game win. She struck out a season-high 10 batters while allowing 12 hits and four runs in the win.
The second game saw WSC erupt for eight runs in the fifth inning to break open a close game as the Wildcats completed the sweep with an 8-1 win.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, WSC used six hits and three UMD errors to produce eight runs to take control of the game.
Megan Hagemann's two-run triple down the right field line was the key hit in the inning along with RBI singles from Bormann and Williams.
Wayne State held an 8-5 advantage in hits over the Bulldogs. Williams was 2 for 4 to lead a balanced effort. Hagemann tripled and
Alyssa Schropp doubled while Loos singled to extend her hitting streak to 18 consecutive games.
Alex Schmidt, Bormann and
Melanie Alyea each singled.
Bormann fired a complete-game five hitter to pick up the win, improving to 15-8 on the season. She struck out nine batters and walked just one while allowing one run in the victory.
Wayne State will host Upper Iowa Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the annual Fill the Hill/Pink Out Cancer Day Game at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
