Wildcat softball gains split with Minnesota State after snapping 11-game losing streak to Mavericks

            Wayne State snapped an 11-game losing streak to Minnesota State dating back to the 2011 season as the Wildcat softball team split a doubleheader with the Mavericks Sunday afternoon in the NSIC regular season finale for both teams played in Mankato, Minnesota.  The host Mavericks posted a 9-0 win in the opener with Wayne State winning the second game 4-1, marking the first time since April 5, 2011 that WSC beat Minnesota State in softball.  WSC ends the regular season at 33-19 and tied for fifth in the NSIC with an 18-12 league mark while Minnesota State is now 35-21 and 20-10 in league play.
            The Wildcats were held to just three hits in the opener as Minnesota State scored nine runs in the first three innings to post the five-inning win.
            Junior shortstop Sam O'Brien was 2 for 2 with a pair of singles while Lexie Loos had the other hit for WSC.
            Senior Sara Scheffert was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing seven runs on five hits, while Sarah Macias worked the final two innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
            The second game saw Kelcie Bormann strike out eight batters in a complete game win as the Wildcats topped the Mavericks for the first time in four years with a 4-1 win.
            WSC opened the scoring in the second inning on a solo homer by O'Brien for a 1-0 lead. 
            The 'Cats scored three runs in the third on just two hits and one MSU error.  The only hits in the inning were bunt singles by Loos and Kaiti WilliamsAlex Schmidt reached on an error and scored on a bases loaded walk to Bormann.  Loos then scored when O'Brien was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Williams scored on an RBI groundout from Melanie Alyea.
            Minnesota State avoided the shutout in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to make the final score 4-1.
            Wayne State had eight hits in the contest with Loos going 3 for 4 at the plate.  O'Brien homered while Megan Hagemann and Alyssa Schropp each doubled. 
            Bormann improved to 18-8 on the season with the complete game win.  She was charged with seven hits and one run while striking out eight and walking two batters. 
            Wayne State will play in the Northern Sun Conference Softball Tournament starting Thursday in Sioux Falls.  The Wildcats will play at noon Thursday against an opponent to be determined.
