Kelcie Bormann combined to fire 12 shutout innings to lead the Wayne State softball team in a 6-1 and 6-0 sweep over MSU Moorhead in Northern Sun Conference played Friday afternoon in Moorhead, Minnesota at the MSUM Softball Field. WSC is now 19-11 and 5-5 in league play while MSUM drops to 11-11 and 1-7 in the NSIC.
The opener saw Scheffert toss five shutout innings while junior
Lexie Loos went 3 for 5 at the plate to power an 11-hit attack as the Wildcats posted a 6-1 win over the Dragons.
WSC used a four-run third inning to take control of the game, adding single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. MSU Moorhead avoided the shutout with a single run in the bottom of the seventh.
Loos had three hits for WSC in the win, her eighth game this season with at least three hits.
Sam O'Brien was 2 for 3 with a double while
Alyssa Schropp and
Kaiti Williams each contributed two singles at the plate.
Scheffert improved to 4-3 on the season with the win, allowing five hits and no runs over five innings of work with two walks and two strikeouts. Junior reliever
Cassy Miller pitched the final two innings and was charged with one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
The second game saw Bormann fire a complete-game shutout with 10 strikeouts to lift the Wildcats in a 6-0 win over the Dragons to complete the sweep.
WSC scored single runs in the second and third innings and broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning to wrap up the scoring for the 6-0 win.
The Wildcats had nine hits in the win. Senior second baseman
Jordan King was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Williams was 2 for 4 with an RBI while
Shelby Wobken tripled and
Alyssa Schropp doubled.
Bormann (10-6) recorded her second complete game shutout of the season, fanning 10 batters without issuing a walk while allowing six hits for the victory.
Wayne State will visit Northern State in an NSIC softball doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m. in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
