Augustana 10 Wayne State 2 (6 innings) Top-seeded Augustana College handed Wayne State its first loss in the NSIC Softball Tournament at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Friday afternoon, defeating the Wildcats 10-2 in the winner's bracket semi-finals. WSC falls to 34-20 and now faces the University of Sioux Falls in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon while the Vikings improve to 49-7.
Wayne State got off to a quick start, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning when
Jordan King singled and scored on a
Kaiti Williams two-run homer over the center field fence. With the home run, Williams moved into second place on the all-time list at WSC with 24, moving past Blaire Kuhl's 23 career homers from 2008-11.
Augustana responded quickly, scoring three runs in the first and three more in the second to take a 6-2 lead after two innings of play.
Wayne State threatened to score again in the third as
Lexie Loos and Williams each singled to put runners on first and second with just one out, but the Wildcats could not get another hit to score more runs as the score remained 6-2.
The Vikings then plated single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth to make the final score 10-2.
Augustana had 12 hits in the contest to seven for Wayne State. Williams paced the Wildcats offensively going 2 for 3 with a homer, single and two RBI's with one run scored. Loos, King,
Sam O'Brien,
Megan Hagemann and
Alex Schmidt also singled for WSC.
Senior
Sara Scheffert suffered the pitching loss, dropping to 7-8 on the season. She pitched 4 1/3 innings and was charged with nine hits and seven runs (six earned) with four walks and one strikeout. Junior
Cassy Miller pitched one inning (second) and allowed three runs on three hits with two walks.
