Box Score 2 Game 1 - Fort Hays State 8 Wayne State 4Game 2 - Wayne State 7 Fort Hays State 3 Despite outhitting Fort Hays State both games, the Wayne State College softball garnered a split at Fort Hays State Tuesday afternoon in Hays, Kansas. The Wildcats dropped the opener 8-4 but came back to win the second game by a 7-3 score. WSC is now 1-5 on the year while FHSU is 6-7.
Wayne State held a 10-8 advantage on hits in the opener, but the host Tigers took advantage of five Wildcat errors and five walks to take an 8-4 win.
FHSU scored four runs in the first to take the early lead. WSC countered with two in the second thanks to run-scoring singles by Katelyn and
Shelby Wobken.
The Tigers scored one run in the third and three more in the fifth for an 8-2 lead. WSC scored twice in the top of the seventh on a two-run double from
Alyssa Schropp that scored
Emily Chandler (single) and
Lexie Loos (single) to make the final score 8-4.
Loos finished 3 for 4 at the plate to lead WSC in the opener. Schropp was 2 for 4 with a double and run scored while
Melanie Alyea had a two-run double.

Katelyn Wobken,
Shelby Wobken and Chandler each singled.
Cassy Miller (0-4) suffered the pitching loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) over 4 1/3 innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Reliever
Riley VanderVeen worked the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit with two strikeouts.
The second game saw all nine Wildcats record at least one hit to back up a complete game three-hitter from Miller in the circle as the Wildcats cracked the win column with a 7-3 win.
Scoreless heading into the fourth inning, WSC produced four runs to take the lead. Chandler had a two-run double while
Shelby Wobken's RBI single was another big hit in the inning.
After Fort Hays State scored one run to make the score 4-1, the Wildcats scored two more runs in the fifth inning for a 6-1 lead.
Melanie Alyea doubled and scored on a
Shelby Wobken sacrifice fly while
Brooke French had an RBI double that scored Schropp (single).
The Tigers countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the WSC lead to 6-3, but the Wildcats scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh on doubles by
Shelby Wobken and Chandler to give WSC the 7-3 win.
WSC had 14 hits in the win to just three by Fort Hays State. Chandler finished 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Melanie Alyea added two hits with a double and two runs scored while
Shelby Wobken went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.
Morgan Hoeg, Loos and Shumaker also had two hits for WSC in the win.
Miller (1-4) fired a complete game to earn the win for the Wildcats. The Wayne senior gave up just three runs on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
Wayne State will head to Florida for their annual spring break trip next week and will play eight games in five days, starting Sunday, March 6
th facing California (Pa.) at 1 p.m. at the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.
