The Wayne State College softball team dropped their first two games Friday afternoon at the Apple Market Classic hosted by Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Missouri as the Wildcats fell to #19 Northwest Missouri 8-1 and Pittsburg State 13-0. With the two losses, WSC is now 4-12 on the year.
In the opener, #19 Northwest Missouri State broke open a close game with a six-run sixth inning to down the Wildcats 8-1.
Wayne State scored its lone run of the contest in the third inning when
Monique Alyea singled and scored on a single to right field by freshman
Emily Chandler.
The Bearcats scored twice in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-1 lead and erupted for a six runs in the sixth on four hits and two Wildcat errors to win the game 8-1.
NW Missouri State had just one more hit than WSC 8-7. Seven different Wildcats each singled in the contest. Senior
Lexie Loos extended her hit streak to 15 games with a single while
Rachel Shumaker, Chandler,
Shelby Wobken,
Katelyn Wobken,
Monique Alyea and
Morgan Hoeg also singled.
Senior
Cassy Miller (3-8) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits over five innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. Reliever
Sarah Macias worked the final inning and gave up one hit.
The second game saw Pittsburg State scored in every inning while producing 16 hits in recording a 13-0 five-inning win over the Wildcats.
WSC was limited to three hits in the contest, an
Alyssa Schropp double and singles by Chandler and
Abbie Hix. Loos saw her 15-game hit streak to open the season come to an end after going 0 for 2 with a walk.
Freshman starter
Riley VanderVeen (1-3) suffered the pitching loss working one inning while reliever
Shelby Wobken pitched the final three innings.
Wayne State will play two more games Saturday at the Apple Market Classic hosted by Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Missouri as the Wildcats challenge Central Missouri at 12 p.m. and Emporia State in a 4 p.m. contest.
