Game 1 - Washburn 6Â Wayne State 4Game 2 - Wayne State 5Â Washburn 4 (9 inn.) Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
         Wayne State College belted out ten hits in the opening game, but left eight runners on base as they had a 6-4 setback to Washburn in game one, but rebounded with 12 more hits in game two to post the 5-4 extra innings victory to split a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Washburn University Softball Complex in Topeka, Kansas. Wayne State is now 22-19 overall at remains 16-4 in the NSIC, while Washburn is now 19-23.
         Three errors, which led to three unearned runs turned out to be the downfall for the 'Cats in game one as they fell 6-4.Â
         After Washburn took the early 2-0 lead, the Wildcats took their first lead of the game after a three run third inning. Seniors
Morgan Hoeg and
Lexie Loos started the inning off with back-to-back doubles, and a
Katelyn Wobken sacrifice fly scored the first run of the game for the 'Cats. Freshman
Emily Chandler topped off the inning in the next at-bat with a two run homer to give WSC the 3-2 lead after three innings.
         Washburn was able to respond in the bottom of the third to take the lead back for good at 5-3 after a three run homer by Taylor Zimmerman, and this was all the Ichabods would need as they held on for the 6-4 game one victory.
         Starter
Shelby Wobken saw six innings of work, giving up five hits and six runs (3 earned) to go along with three strike outs. With the loss, she falls to 5-3 on the season.
         WSC had 10 hits in the loss, led by
Melanie Alyea and
Alyssa Schropp who both went 2 for 3 in the contest.Â
Lexie Loos also added a double and a single for the 'Cats and
Emily Chandler hit her seventh home run of the season to drive home 2 RBI.
         The Wildcats were able to keep the bats hot in game two, as they pounded out 12 hits over nine innings to take home the 5-4 extra innings victory over the Ichabods.
WSC scored single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings, while Washburn scored single runs in the first, second, and third innings to send the game to extras tied at three.
         A
Morgan Hoeg single through the left side in the ninth inning scored
Sam O'Brien to give Wayne State the 4-3 lead. Then with the bases loaded,
Emily Chandler was able to single to left field to score
Caitlin Fehringer to make the score 5-3. Â Washburn tried to respond and was able to push across one run, but left the tying run stranded on second base, as the Wildcats held on for the 5-4 nine inning victory.
         The Wildcats and Ichabods both pounded out 12 hits in the game.Â
Emily Chandler led the 'Cats in game two going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI.Â
Lexie Loos,
Katelyn Wobken, and
Morgan Hoeg all went 2 for 4, while
Melanie Alyea went 2 for 5 in the game.
         Cassie Miller (16-13) was credited with the win, allowing just three hits and one run (unearned) over three innings of work. Starting pitcher
Riley VanderVeen saw five innings of work where she allowed seven hits and three runs.Â
Sarah Macias also saw an inning of action in the game, and allowed two hits.
         The Wildcats return to Northern Sun Conference play this weekend with road trips to Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 1 p.m. and St. Cloud State Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
