Box Score 2 Game 1 - Wayne State 6 Minnesota Duluth 2Game 2 - Minnesota Duluth 8 Wayne State 1 Wayne State College remained in second place in the Northern Sun Conference softball standings by gaining a split at Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats won the opener 6-2 before falling 8-1 in the nightcap. WSC is now 23-20 on the season and 17-5 in league play while UMD is now 25-12 and 14-6 in the NSIC.
The opener saw WSC rally late with a three-run fifth and two-run sixth inning to take down the Bulldogs 6-2.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first when
Lexie Loos singled and later scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
UMD scored twice in the third for a 2-1 lead, but WSC used a three-run fifth to take the lead for good and added two more runs in the sixth for the 6-2 win.
In the fifth,
Morgan Hoeg's single scored
Alyssa Schropp (single) to tie the score at 2-2.
Caitlin Fehringer singled and scored on a wild pitch while Hoeg scored on
Katelyn Wobken's single to close out the inning.
Schropp's RBI single in the sixth scored
Shelby Wobken (walk) with the first run of the inning while Fehringer laced a double to score Schropp with the final run.
Senior
Cassy Miller (17-13) worked six strong innings to pick up the win, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Senior
Sarah Macias pitched the final inning and allowed one hit.
WSC had nine hits in the win. Fehringer was 2 for 3 with a double followed by Schropp going 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Melanie Alyea also went 2 for 4 with a double while Hoeg, Loos and
Katelyn Wobken each singled.
The second game saw Minnesota Duluth salvage a split by using a four-run second inning to post an 8-1 win over the Wildcats.
WSC scored their lone run of the game in the first inning Loos reached on a bunt single to lead off the game and later scored on
Emily Chandler's RBI single down the left field line.
UMD tied the score with one run in the bottom of the first and took control of the game with four runs in the second. The Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for the 8-1 victory.
WSC had six hits in the game, led by Chandler going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Other Wildcat hitters were Loos,
Melanie Alyea, Fehringer and Hoeg with one single each.
Shelby Wobken (5-4) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Cassy Miller worked the next 3 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits while freshman
Riley VanderVeen pitched the final inning and was charged with one run on one hit.
Wayne State visits St. Cloud State Sunday at 1 p.m. in a NSIC doubleheader.
