Wildcats drop doubleheader at Northern State

            Northern State registered a Northern Sun Conference softball sweep over Wayne State College Saturday afternoon at Mocassin Creek in Aberdeen, South Dakota as the Wolves downed the Wildcats 9-8 and 10-2.  The host Wolves improve to 24-17 and 9-8-1 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 10-32 and 4-14 in league games.
            The opener saw NSU score five runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 9-8 victory.  Down 3-0 entering the third inning, WSC tied the score on a solo homer from Monique Alyea and a two-run shot from Jordyn Breitbarth
            The 'Cats took a 7-4 lead in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single from Jenna Stewart followed by a three-run homer from Katelyn Wobken.  But NSU used a five-run fifth to take the lead for good at 9-7.  WSC scored its final run in the sixth inning on a Melanie Alyea single that scored Monique Alyea.
            Northern State outhit WSC in the game 16-11.  Monique Alyea was 3 for 4 with a homer and double followed by Breitbarth going 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBI.  Melanie Alyea and Jenna Stewart each had two hits while Wobken added a three-run homer.
            Sophomore Riley Vanderveen (1-11) was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings.  Reliever Nataliah Hopkins worked the final 4 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on 10 hits.
            The second game saw the host Wolves scored at least one run in every innings as Northern State completed the sweep with a 10-2 win.
            WSC scored both of its runs in the fourth inning on just one hit – a Jordyn Breitbarth double – and one NSU error.
            NSU held a 14-3 advantage in hits over the Wildcats.  Breitbarth doubled while Melanie Alyea and Abbie Hix each singled.
            Freshman Allison Niemeier (0-4) suffered the pitching loss, allowing six runs on seven hits over two innings.  Nataliah Hopkins and Riley Vanderveen also worked in relief.
            Wayne State is in action again on Tuesday hosting Upper Iowa in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
