#21 Minnesota State sweeps WSC

            #21 Minnesota State defeated Wayne State College 12-1 and 16-1 Sunday afternoon in a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader played at the MSU Softball Diamond in Mankato, Minnesota.  The Mavericks are 6-0 in the NSIC and 28-4 on the season while WSC falls to 6-24 and 0-6 in league play.
            The opener saw the host Mavericks score six runs in the third and six more in the fourth inning while WSC scored its lone run of the game in the top of the fourth when senior Melanie Alyea homered to right field, ending a no-hit bid by Minnesota State.
            It was the lone hit in the contest for the Wildcats.  Starter Nataliah Hopkins (6-13) was the losing pitcher with relief help from Allison Niemeier.
            The second game saw MSU pound out 17 hits while scoring in every inning to top the 'Cats 16-1.
            WSC scored first when Katelyn Wobken singled and scored on a Rachel Shumaker single for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
            But Minnesota State scored four runs in the first followed by five in the second and one in the third for a 10-1 lead.  The Mavericks then scored six in the fourth to make the final score 16-1.
            Wayne State had five hits in the contest, led by Emily Chandler going 2 for 3 at the plate.  Monique Alyea doubled while Wobken and Shumaker each singled.
            Hopkins (6-14) suffered the pitching loss in the second game with relief coming from Riley Vanderveen.
            Wayne State is scheduled to be at home Tuesday afternoon for its home opener against Winona State starting at 1 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
