St. Cloud State spoiled Senior Day for the Wayne State College softball team on a chilly Saturday afternoon in Wayne as the Huskies downed the Wildcats 8-2 and 6-2 in Northern Sun Conference softball played at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. Three Wildcat seniors played their final game in a Wildcat uniform -
Melanie Alyea,
Monique Alyea and
Alyssa Schropp. WSC ends the year at 11-39 and 5-21 in the NSIC while SCSU is 31-21 and 15-11 in league play.
The opener saw the Huskies score three runs in the first and another in the second to take an early 4-0 lead as SCSU coasted to an 8-2 win.
Down 8-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, WSC avoided the shutout with a
Melanie Alyea solo homer and added another run in the seventh when
Jordyn Breitbarth walked and scored on a
Monique Alyea groundout to make the final score 8-2.
WSC was held to just two hits in the game - a second inning single by
Alyssa Schropp and a sixth inning homer by
Melanie Alyea.
Sophomore
Riley Vanderveen (2-14) suffered the pitching loss, working 3 1/3 innings. Freshman
Allison Niemeier pitched the remaining 3 2/3 innings.
The second game saw the Huskies score three runs in the third inning to take control in a 6-2 win to complete the sweep.
Trailing 3-0 entering the fourth inning, WSC got on the board with an RBI single from Schropp that scored
Melanie Alyea (sinlge).
After SCSU took a 5-1 lead with two runs in the top of the fifth, the 'Cats scored again in the bottom of the frame on a solo homer from Wobken. The Huskies added an insurance run in the seventh to make the final score 6-2.
WSC had seven hits in the contest, led by Wobken going 3 for 4 with a homer.
Rachel Shumaker doubled while
Melanie Alyea, Schropp and
Abbie Hix each had singles.
Nataliah Hopkins (9-20) was tagged with the loss in the circle, charged with five runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings of work with three walks. Vanderveen pitched the final two innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Sunday's scheduled doubleheader against Minnesota Duluth in Wayne has been cancelled due to the weather, ending the Wildcat season.
