Home run ball gives Wildcats split against Minot State

            Wayne State used two home runs from Melanie Alyea and another by Emily Chandler in the second game for a 13-5 win, allowing the Wildcats to split a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader with Minot State Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  Minot State won the opener 8-4 and is now 13-10 and 5-5 in the NSIC while WSC is 7-27 and 1-9 in league play.
            Minot State hit two home runs and scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to snap a 3-3 tie as the Beavers won 8-4.
            Emily Chandler's RBI single in the first scored Katelyn Wobken (single) for a 1-0 Wildcat lead. 
            MISU scored one in the second and two in the fifth for a 3-1 lead, but WSC rallied in the sixth and scored two runs on five hits while leaving the bases loaded to even the score at 3-3.  Jordyn Breitbarth and Chandler had RBI singles for the Wildcats.
            But Minot State erupted for five runs on seven hits in the seventh to take an 8-3 lead.  WSC scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring in Minot State's 8-4 win.
            MISU had 12 hits in the game to eight for WSC.  Chandler finished 3 for 4 with three RBI.  Wobken had two singles, going 2 for 4 with three runs scored.  Melanie Alyea, Rachel Shumaker and Breitbarth each singled.
            Sophomore Riley Vanderveen suffered the pitching loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts while freshman Allison Niemeier worked the final 2/3 inning.
            The second game saw WSC score eight runs in the first two innings thanks to a trio of home runs as the Wildcats gained a split with a 13-5 win in five innings.
            The first inning saw Emily Chandler hit a two-run blast followed by a solo homer by Melanie Alyea for a 3-0 WSC lead.  Minot State scored four in the top of the second to take a short-lived 4-3 lead. 
            WSC countered with a five-run second to take the lead for good at 8-4.  Melanie Alyea's three-run homer was the big hit along with RBI singles from Monique Alyea and Chandler.
            Both teams scored single runs to make the score 9-5 entering the bottom of the fourth.  WSC then scored four runs on three hits and one MISU error to take a 13-5 win.  Melanie Alyea had an RBI double with Breithbarth and Blair Shanks each adding run-scoring singles.
            WSC had 12 hits in the win, led by Melanie Alyea's 3 for 3 game with two homers, a double, five RBI and three runs scored.  Chandler was 2 for 2 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored while Katelyn Wobken finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored.  Shanks had two singles in three plate appearances.
            Nataliah Hopkins (7-15) fired a complete game win for the Wildcats, giving up five runs on 10 hits over five innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
            Wayne State will be at home again Sunday hosting the University of Mary in a noon doubleheader.
