#12 WSC overcomes 30 attack errors to rally past CSU Pueblo

            #12 Wayne State College overcame 30 attack errors to rally for a 3-2 win at CSU-Pueblo Friday afternoon in non-conference college volleyball played at the 2017 Steel and Silver Classic in Pueblo, Colorado.  Scores of the match were 23-25, 25-13, 20-25, 25-18, 15-12.  WSC improved to 4-1 with the win while the host ThunderWolves dropped to 1-4.
            The first set saw 11 ties and six lead changes, but CSUP scored four of the final five points in the set to edge the Wildcats 25-23.  Redshirt freshman Jaci Brahmer produced five kills in the set for WSC while sophomore libero Haley Kauth accounted for nine digs.
            WSC bounced back in the second set, using four service aces, to lead from start to finish in a 25-13 set win.
            The third set saw a combined 21 attack errors by the two teams, but the host ThunderWolves forced 12 WSC attack errors to offset six Wildcat blocks in the set as CSU Pueblo took a 2-1 set lead with a 25-20 third set victory.
            The Wildcats rebounded in the fourth set and used 13 kills and a .273 attack percentage to down the ThunderWolves 25-18.  Sophomore Katie Stephens had the hot hand for the Wildcats in the set with six kills and no errors on 11 attacks.
            In the fifth set, WSC overcame an early 7-3 deficit and scored six of the final seven points of the set to rally for a 15-12 win and take the match 3-2.
            Wayne State finished the match with a .137 attack percentage, recording 57 kills on 197 attempts with 30 errors.  CSUP hit .102 for the match with 52 kills, 31 errors and 206 attacks.  The Wildcats held a 106-98 edge in digs over the ThunderWolves and had 14 blocks to eight for CSUP.  WSC also held a 7-3 advantage in service aces.
            Sophomore Katie Stephens led WSC with 14 kills and 11 digs in the win.  Brahmer added 13 kills with seven blocks while junior Maria Wortmann accounted for 12 kills and six blocks.
            Sophomore libero Haley Kauth recorded 32 digs while junior setter Megan Gebhardt handed out 43 assists to go with 16 digs.  Stephens and Bree Ackermann were each credited with two service aces for WSC.
            The Wildcats were slated to face Texas A&M – Commerce in a 4 p.m. match Friday at the Steel and Silver Classic in Pueblo.
