Senior first baseman
Emily Chandler hit a game-tying three-run homer in the top of the seventh, but Concordia-St. Paul rallied in the bottom of the inning with a bases loaded walk off single to top Wayne State College 5-4 in the second game of a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader played Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. The Golden Bears swept the twinbill with a 15-3 win in the opener, improving to 20-10 and 7-3 in the NSIC while WSC falls to 9-17 and 0-10 in league games.
After WSC scored two runs in the top of the first inning in the opener, Concordia-St. Paul responded with a five-run first and seven-run second inning to take control.
The Wildcats used run-scoring singles from Chandler and
Ashley Hernandez in the first inning to take the early lead.
With CSP leading 12-2 after two innings, Hix closed the Wildcat scoring with a solo homer over the center field fence. The Golden Bears produced one run in the third and two more in the fourth to finish with the 15-3 win in five innings.
Wayne State finished with five hits in the game, led by Hix going for 2 for 3 with a homer.
Kim Vidlak, Chandler and Hernandez each singled.
Sophomore starter
Maddie Moser (3-7) suffered the pitching loss with relief coming from freshman
Makenna Adkison.
The second game saw Wayne State battle with the Golden Bears, but after a game-tying three run homer in the top of the seventh from Chandler tied the score at 4-4 Concordia-St. Paul used a bases loaded walk off in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep with a 5-4 win.
WSC scored first again in the second contest, using an RBI double from Chandler that scored
Kortney Buresh for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
The Golden Bears scored one run in the thrid, two in the fourth and one more in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh.
In the seventh, WSC opened with
Kim Vidlak reaching on a CSP fielding error and Buresh singling to left field. Chandler then stepped up to the plate and blasted a three-run homer to right center field that knotted the score at 4-4.
But the Golden Bears ruined the Wildcat rally by scoring with two outs on a bases loaded walk off single up the middle to post the 5-4 win.
WSC had six hits in the contest, led by Chandler going 2 for 3 with a homer and all four WIldcat RBI. Buresh ended 2 for 3 with two runs scored while freshman catcher
Kamryn Sparks was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.
Starter
Riley Vanderveen worked six strong innings, allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Moser relieved in the seventh and suffered the loss (3-8).
Wayne State will be at home again Sunday entertaining Minnesota State in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
