Wayne State throwers hit two NCAA provisional marks with one event win to open the 2022-23 women's indoor track and field schedule Friday and Saturday at the SDSU Holiday Invite held at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, South Dakota.
Wayne State placed fourth in the team standings with 41 points. South Dakota topped South Dakota State 180-156.5 for the women's team title with Dordt third at 49 points. Augustana followed WSC in fifth with 40 points while Hastings took sixth with 32. 11 teams scored points in the meet.
Graduate student
Mckenzie Scheil (Fillmore Centra HS) opened the season with an event win in the weight throw, recording an NCAA provisional mark of 64' 3 ¾". She also placed fourth in the shot put at 43' 1 ½".
Senior
Brooklynn Chipps (Clearwater HS) also reached an NCAA provisional mark placing third in the weight throw at 58' 6 ½". Other top 10 finishers for WSC in the weight throw were
Kendra Paasch eighth (52' 10 ¼") and
Reilly Young 10
th (51' ¼").
Paasch was the top WSC finisher in the shot put placing third with a mark of 43' 2 ½" and added a fourth place mark Saturday in the discus throwing 143' 2 ½" while
Reilly Young took seventh in the discus at 131' 8 ¾".
Sixth place finishes were posted by
Sarah Cotton in the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.18 seconds, junior
Kelsey Larsen was sixth in the 3,000-meter run at 10:54.32 and
Keyla Sambo in the triple jump (35' 4 ½").
Junior
Emily Smollen had a pair of top 10 finishes, taking seventh in the triple jump (34' 11 ¾") and ninth in the long jump with a mark of 16' 11 ¼".
Freshman
Jozlyn Barnes (Plattsmouth HS) had a seventh place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.63.
