Host Washburn scored runs in every inning to defeat Wayne State College 13-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon at the Washburn Invitational Softball Tournament in Topeka, Kansas. The host Ichabods improve to 8-6 on the year while the Wildcats fall to 2-7.
Wayne State opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-out solo homer run from senior first baseman
Kamryn Sparks for an early 1-0 lead.
But host Washburn responded quickly with a six-run bottom of the first on only two hits, taking advantage of four Wildcat walks and an error to take a 6-1 lead.
Washburn added one run in the second and produced three runs in the third and fourth innings for a 13-1 victory in five innings over the Wildcats.
Wayne State had three hits in the contest. Sparks had a solo homer while
Jenna Etmans and
Hayley Murphy each singled.
Freshman starter
Grace Lucka (0-2) suffered the pitching loss with relief help from
Callie Carraher and Sami Felt.
Wayne State will play two more games on Sunday at the Washburn Invitational facing Pittsburg State at 11:30 a.m. and Central Missouri at 5:30 p.m.
