Missouri S&T gains series split with 8-1 win in Monday finale

            Missouri S&T jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead on their way to an 8-1 victory over Wayne State College in the finale of a four-game non-conference baseball series to open the season for the Wildcats.  Both teams are now 2-2 on the season following Monday's contest in Rolla, Missouri. 
            The host Miners jumped out quickly, taking a 4-0 lead in the opening frame.  Missouri S&T took advantage of three walks and one Wildcat error combined with two hits to score four runs.
            Missouri S&T added another run in the second inning for a 5-0 advantage, chasing Wildcat starting pitcher Jackson Shelburne
            The Miners added a solo run in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning for an 8-0 lead before Wayne State got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning.
            Freshman centerfielder Carter Thomas drew a one-out walk and later scored on a pinch-hit single from Jack Jones to get the Wildcats on the board making the score 8-1.
            Missouri S&T held a 10-7 advantage in hits over WSC.  Thomas led the 'Cats at the plate going 2 for 3 while scoring the lone WSC run while freshman second baseman Nate Cunningham was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles.  Jack Jones added a pinch-hit RBI single while Nick Ripa and Dylan Jutze also recorded hits for the Wildcats.
Wayne State used six pitchers in the contest.  Shelburne started the game and was tagged with the loss in 1 1/3 innings of work.  Sophomore lefthander Jacob Kneifl followed with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.  Sophomore righthander Kolt Davis worked 1 1/3 innings and gave up one run with redshirt freshman lefthander Riley Miller pitching the next 1 2/3 innings charged with two hits and two runs.
            Sophomore righthanders Dylan Rodgers and Nolan Belt each worked one inning of scoreless relief to close the contest.
            The Wildcats hit the road again next weekend for a four-game non-conference series at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri starting with a nine-inning game Friday at 1 p.m.
