Game Recap: Baseball |

'Cats sweep Wolves with pair of one-run wins

Game 1 - Wayne State 2 Northern State 1

Game 2 - Wayne State 7 Northern State 6

Junior first baseman Hunter Babe went 6 for 7 with three RBI's that included the go-ahead two-run single in the opener as Wayne State College swept Northern State 2-1 and 7-6 Wednesday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference baseball played in Elkhorn at Frerichs Legion Field.  WSC is now 8-11 and 2-3 in the NSIC while NSU has records of 5-11 and 0-5 in league play.
The opener was a pitcher's battle between Wayne State's Jackson Shelburne and Northern State's Michael Chevalier.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.  Cade Lynam opened with a single and Carter Thomas walked.  With two outs, Quinn McCafferty was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Babe then stepped up and laced a two-run single to right center field scoring Lynam and Thomas putting the 'Cats in front 2-0.
Northern State got a pinch-hit solo homer to lead off the seventh inning to make the final score 2-1.
Both teams had five hits in the game.  Babe was 3 for 3 with a pair of RBI's while Cade Lynam and Thomas each singled and scored.
Shelburne fired six strong innings to pick up the win on the mound, now 1-1 on the year.  He gave up one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.  Freshman Braden Cannon came on in the seventh and retired all three batters faced with one strikeout to notch his third save of the young season.
The second game saw WSC build a 7-4 lead, then hold back a late Wolves rally to complete the sweep with a 7-6 victory.
Wayne State scored three runs in the first to grab the early momentum.  McCafferty and Babe each had RBI doubles while Thomas produced an RBI single to highlight the inning.
NSU scored three runs in the top of the third to knot the score at 3-3.  Both teams scored single runs in the fourth for a 4-4 tie.  Babe doubled and later scored on a Wolves passed ball for the Wildcat run.
A three-run sixth inning put the Wildcats in front 7-4.  Freshman Trey Wells belted a two-run homer over the left field fence to score McCafferty (singled).  Nick Ripa then reached on an error and scored on another Wolves error for a 7-4 Wildcat lead.
Northern State scored in the top of the seventh to make the score 7-5 and got a solo homer in the top of the ninth for a final score of 7-6.
WSC had eight hits in the win, led by Babe going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles.  McCafferty went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.  Wells hit a two-run homer while Colin Lynam doubled.
Junior Brody Sintek (1-3), the second of four Wildcat pitchers, recorded the pitching win.  He worked four innings of relief and struck out four batters while allowing six hits and three runs.  Sophomore righthander Kolt Davis pitched the final two innings to record his first save of the season.
Wayne State is scheduled to face Southwest Minnesota State this weekend with a location, dates and times to be announced Thursday or Friday.
