Fast start carries WSC in 12-4 victory over College of Staten Island

            Wayne State scored eight runs in the first two innings and took advantage of 11 walks to defeat College of Staten Island (NY) 12-4 Monday afternoon at the National Training Center Softball Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.  WSC is now 2-11 on the season while the Dolphis drop to 2-1.
            The 'Cats got off to a fast start, scoring five runs in the first inning on just one hit.  The first four Wildcat batters drew walks for the first run of the inning.  Designated player Hayley Murphy followed with a two-run single while the final two runs were the result of wild pitches.
            Staten Island got right back in the game in the top of the second with four runs on six hits to cut the Wayne State lead to 5-4.
            But Wayne State responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second to build the lead back to 8-4.  Riley Holmberg led off with a triple and scored on a Kim Vidlak sacrifice fly.  Madison Gomez and Louisa Stowman each walked with both players scoring on a two-run single to left center field by Natalie Arbizu
            The Wildcats added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game on the eight-run rule with the final score of 12-4.
Holmberg and Gomez each had RBI singles to highlight the inning.  Arbizu started the inning with a walk and later scored when Lauren Laudick reached on an error and the other WSC run scored on a steal and throwing error.
            Wayne State held a 12-10 edge in hits over College of Staten Island.  Laudick was 3 for 4 with a double and run scored.  Holmberg finished 2 for 4 with a triple and three runs scored.  Vidlak and Murphy each added two singles with Murphy recording two RBI.  Arbizu and Gomez each added two RBI.
            Sophomore starter Sami Felt (2-5) fired a complete game win for the Wildcats.  She allowed four runs with two strikeouts and one walk.
            Wayne State plays two more games Tuesday at the National Training Center Spring Game, facing West Virginia Wesleyan at 8 a.m. and Cedarville (Ohio) at 12:45 p.m.
