Illinois Springfield scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to hand Wayne State College a heartbreaking 2-1 loss Thursday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Softball Games Tournament in Leesburg, Florida. The UIS Prairie Stars are now 13-5 while the Wildcats fall to 3-14.
The game was a scoreless pitcher's duel heading into the seventh inning. Wayne State's
Grace Lucka allowed just two hits through six innings while Illinois-Springfield starter Reagan Miles allowed just three Wildcat runners to reach base through six innings.
In the Wildcat seventh, catcher
Hayley Murphy singled to left field with one out and scored on the next at bat when second baseman
Madison Gomez doubled to right center field.
But Illinois Springfield came back in the bottom of the seventh and used a pair of singles followed by a Wildcat error and another single to score two runs and hand the Wildcats a heartbreaking defeat.
Illinois Springfield had five hits in the game to four by the Wildcats. Murphy reached base all three times with a double, single and hit by the pitch. Gomez had an RBI double while
Louisa Stowman had the other Wildcat hit, a single.
Lucka suffered the pitching loss despite working a compete game in the circle, allowing just five hits.
Wayne State will conclude play Friday at the National Training Center Spring Games facing Grand Valley State (Mich.) at 8 a.m. Central Time and Kentucky Wesleyan at 10:30 a.m.
