Wayne State and MSU Moorhead split a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader in Wayne Monday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex as the Wildcats registered a 6-1 win in the opener followed by a 14-4 win by the visiting Dragons in the second game. MSUM is now 24-10 and 12-4 in league games while WSC sits at 10-30 overall and 5-12 in NSIC games.
The opener saw Wildcat sophomore starter Sami Felt toss complete game four-hitter to go with six runs in the first two innings as Wayne State captured a 6-1 victory in the opener.
WSC posted two runs in the first inning, thanks to an RBI single from
Paiton Tornberg that drove home
Riley Holmberg (double) while
Kim Vidlak singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Wildcats scored four runs in the second inning to grab a commanding 6-0 lead.
Lauren Laudick's two-run double scored Holmberg and
Hayley Murphy, who both singled. Vidlak then followed with a run-scoring double to bring home Laudick with Vidlak later scoring when Tornberg reached base on a MSUM error.
MSU Moorhead avoided the shutout in the seventh inning with a two-out solo homer to make the final 6-1.
Wayne State held an 11-4 advantage in hits over the Dragons. Laudick and Vidlak each went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double. Laudick had two RBIs while Vidlak scored twice. Holmberg finished 2-4 with a double and two runs scored while
Madison Gomez, Murphy and Tornberg each singled.
Felt (4-13) was impressive in the circle, firing a complete game win. She gave up just one run on four hits.
The second game saw the visiting Dragons erupt for six runs in the fifth inning to break open a close game as MSU Moorhead gained a split with a 14-4 win.
MSUM scored two runs in the first inning, but WSC came back with three in the bottom of the second on two outs to take a 3-2 lead. Holmberg drew a bases loaded walk to score Gomez (walked). Laudick followed with an RBI singled to bring home Murphy (single) with Vidlak singling up the middle to score
Natalie Arbizu (walk) for the third run.
The Dragons tied the score at 3-3 with a run in the third and then produced six runs in the fifth inning to grab a 9-3 lead.
WSC scored once in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 9-4 as Murphy hit a one-out homer over the center field wall. MSU Moorhead added two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh for the 14-4 win.
The game featured a combined 18 runs, 19 walks and 22 hits.
MSU Moorhead had 17 hits to just five by Wayne State. Murphy was the lone Wildcat with multiple hits going 2 for 3 with a home run, double and two runs scored. Holmberg doubled while Laudick and Vidlak singled.

Wayne State's scheduled road doubleheader at Winona State Wednesday has been moved to Wayne due to a weekend snowstorm in southern Minnesota. The games will now be played Tuesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne at 1 and 3 p.m.
