Augustana University held Wayne State to just five hits in an NSIC baseball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex as the Wildcats fell to the Vikings by scores of 4-0 and 14-3. WSC is now 20-21 and 14-13 in the league while Augustana is now 34-16 and 23-7.
The first game saw the Wildcats leave 10 runners on base – six in scoring position – as the Vikings blanked the Wildcats 4-0.
WSC put runners on second and third in the first with one out but could not score. The 'Cats also left two runners on base in the second, third and seventh innings.
Augustana scored single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth for the 4-0 win.
Colin Lynam had Wayne State's lone extra base hit in the game, a first inning double, to highlight a 2 for 2 day at the plate.
Cade Lynam and
Chase Douglas also singled.
Sophomore lefthander
Jacob Kneifl (2-1) was the hard luck loser, throwing five strong innings and allowing just five hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.
Dylan Rodgers and
Nolan Belt also worked in relief for WSC.
The second game was all Augustana as the Vikings jumped out to a seven-run first inning to take a 14-3 win in seven innings.
Trailing 13-0 entering the fifth inning, WSC avoided the shutout when
Tommy Roland reached on a Viking error and scored on a groundout by
Chase Douglas.
The 'Cats added two runs in the sixth and avoided a no-hitter when
Quinn McCafferty had an RBI single to right center field for one run with the other coming on a
Kyler Essink fielder's choice.
Starter
Brody Sintek suffered the pitching loss.

The Wildcats will be on the road this weekend playing a three-game NSIC series at Sioux Falls with a doubleheader Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium followed by a nine-inning game Sunday at 12 p.m.
