Wayne State uses strong hitting day to sweep Sioux Falls

Wayne State would use a strong day from the plate to take two games from Sioux Falls (4-2, 20-12) inside Sioux Falls Stadium. Wayne State moves to 22-21 on the season with a 16-13 record in the NSIC. Sioux Falls moves to 12-32 with a 11-19 record in the NSIC with the loss.

GAME ONE: Wayne State 4 Sioux Falls 2

A strong fourth inning would give the Wildcats the 4-2 win over the Cougars in the first game of the doubleheader. 

It wouldn't take the Wildcats long to get on the board in this one, scoring one in the first inning of a Hunter Babe single to left field allowing Cade Lynam to score for WSC making it 1-0 'Cats after one. USF would score two in the bottom half of the second to take the lead on WSC, capitalizing on a pair of Wildcat errors making it 2-1 Cougars after two. Wayne State would score again in the fourth off a two run home run from catcher Trey Wells. It was Wells 11th home run of the season making it 3-2 WSC. Chase Douglas would then hit his first home run of his Wildcat career making it 4-2 which WSC would go on to win the game with that being the final score. 

Wells was the leading batter for WSC going 1-3 from the plate with a home run and a pair of RBIs in the win. Babe and Quinn McCafferty would also go 1-3 from the ple with Babe picking up an RBI for WSC. 

Corbin Kirk would get the win for Wayne State moving to 4-4 on the season. Kirk would pitch 6.1 innings for the 'Cats striking out eight batters allowing four Cougar hits. Braden Cannon would also get the save for Wayne State, his ninth of the season. Cannon is one save away from tying the single season save record for WSC. 

GAME TWO: Wayne State 20 Sioux Falls 12 

The Wildcats would win a shootout in game two of the double header inside of Sioux Falls Stadium. 

Wayne State would take the early 1-0 advantage in the first inning off a sac fly from McCafferty which allowed Cade Lynam to score. WSC would then build the lead to 3-0 in the second inning off a Carter Thomas single to left center bringing in Blake Stanley. Thomas would then score off a Cougar error making it 3-0 WSC. Sioux Falls would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning scoring on a Wildcat error making it 3-1 in favor of Wayne State. Cougars would then score three runs in the third to take the lead on WSC 4-3 after three innings.

Wayne State would then explode in the fourth inning scoring eight runs off of five hits with one Cougar error. Cade Lynam would single to right field to bring in the first run of the inning. Douglas would then reach on a fielder's choice which brought in another Wayne State run. The third run was brought in by Cade Lynam who scored off a cougar wild pitch. Wells would bring in the fourth run of the inning with a single to right center. Stanley would then bring in a pair of runs while a Cannon double would bring in the eighth run of the inning making it 11-4 WSC after four innings. 


WSC would add one in the fifth off a McCafferty single making it 12-4 'Cats. USF wouldn't go away scoring three in the bottom half of the fifth inning cutting into the WSC lead at 12-7. Thomas would open up the sixth inning with a home run out to right field making it 13-7 WSC. Noah Strizek would then score off a Cougar error making it 14-7 WSC after six. Wayne State would add three more in the seventh off a Douglas double and a Stanley home run making it 17-7. 


Sioux Falls still would put up a fight though, scoring four runs off of four hits in the bottom half of the seventh making it 17-11. Wayne State would strike back in the eighth inning highlighted by a Cannon triple and a Thomas home run which brought in three runs making it 20-11 WSC. USF would score one more in the bottom half of the eighth allowing Wayne State to go on and win the game 20-12. 


Carter Thomas was the leading batter for Wayne State going 4-5 from the plate with five runs scored and five RBIs. Blake Stanley would go 3-6 from the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs in the win. 

Jackson Shelburne would get the win for Wayne State moving him to 4-2 on the season. Shelburne pitched 4.1 innings producing four strikeouts.

Wayne State will be in action tomorrow for the final game of the three game series against Sioux Falls with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
