William Jewell tops Wildcats 4-1

Box Score             Wayne State outhit William Jewell 9-7, but the Wildcats left eight runners on base as the host Cardinals defeated Wayne State 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the William Jewell Softball Triangular in Liberty, Missouri.  William Jewell is now 7-8 on the season while WSC drops to 1-12.
            The Wildcats opened the scoring in the second inning as Annika Manzanares opened with a single and later scored on Emilee Marth's double for a 1-0 lead.
            After William Jewell tied the game with one run in the bottom of the second, WSC got the first two runners on base in the third as Jordyn Klein reached on an error and Jordyn Rochholz singled to start the inning, but the 'Cats could not get another runner on base to end the threat.   
            The Cardinals produced two runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 3-1 lead and added another run in the sixth for a 4-1 advantage.
            WSC had three singles in the seventh inning but again could not come up with the extra base hit to score any runs as the Wildcats left more runners on base and ended with a 4-1 loss.
            Wayne State held a 9-7 advantage in hits over the Cardinals.  Klein and Rochholz each had two singles to lead the Wildcats at the plate.  Marth added an RBI double while Manzanares singled and scored with Lauren Laudick and Abby Husing each collecting singles.
            Starting pitcher Sami Felt (1-5) suffered the loss in 3 2/3 innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.  Sophomore reliever Sophie Stuart fired the remaining 2 1/3 innings and gave up one run on two hits.
            Wayne State is scheduled to play Northwest Missouri State Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the William Jewell Triangular in Liberty, Mo.
