Box Score Wayne State forced 36 Chadron State turnovers while four Wildcat players scored in double figures in a 95-53 non-conference women's basketball victory Saturday afternoon over the Eagles at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats improve to 4-0 on the season with Chadron State dropping to 0-3.
The first half of the opening quarter was back-and-forth between the two clubs with three ties and three lead changes tied at 11-11 five minutes into the game.
WSC then scored the final 10 points of the quarter on consecutive 3-pointers from freshman guard
Cassie Allen followed by baskets from
Lily Fitzgerald and
Tenleigh Smith giving the 'Cats a 21-11 lead after one quarter.
The 'Cats extended their lead to 14 four minutes into the second quarter at 30-16. After Chadron State scored the next five points to get within nine at 30-21, the Wildcats scored 17 straight points in the final 3:35 of the quarter to take a commanding 47-21 lead at intermission.
WSC made 9 of 18 shots in the quarter, including 4 of 5 from 3-ponit range, to take control of the contest.
Wayne State continued their strong shooting in the third quarter, making 10 of 15 shots, as nine different players scored, giving the 'Cats a 73-34 lead after three quarters.
Ella Sharar sank a pair of 3-pointers and scored a team-high six points as WSC outscored Chadron State in the third quarter 26-13.
The fourth quarter saw all seven players that hit the court score for the Wildcats, led by sophomore
Emma Frost with nine points, and Wayne State made 8 of 16 shots in the quarter to end the game strong with a 95-53 victory.
Four Wildcats reached double figures and all 13 Wayne State players scored in the contest, led by senior forward
Rachel Dahlen with 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting.
Tenleigh Smith followed with 12,
Kelsey Willems scored 11 and
Kylah vanDonkersgoed added 10.
Wayne State shot 52.2 percent from the field making 36 of 69 shots. The 'Cats were 11 of 18 from the 3-point line and 12 for 22 at the charity stripe.
For Chadron State, Audrey Quintana poured in 15 points with Kenna Wagner scoring 14.
Chadron State was 19 of 52 shooting for 36.5 percent, going 8 of 28 from the 3-point line and 7 for 8 at the free throw stripe.
Wayne State held a 40-33 edge in rebounding over the Eagles thanks to six rebounds by Smith.
Dahlen and Willems each recorded six steals while Smith handed out a team-high four assists.
By creating 36 turnovers on Chadron State, the Wildcats held a sizeable 41-16 advantage in points off turnovers.
The Wildcats open Northern Sun Conference play at home Tuesday evening hosting Augustana in a 5:30 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
