Box Score Hayley Murphy's solo homer in the fourth inning and a complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts from redshirt freshman pitcher
Kennadi Borngrebe powered the Wayne State softball team to a 1-0 win over St. Cloud State Saturday morning at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. The second game made it to the bottom of the third inning until being canceled due to rain. WSC improves to 19-12 and 4-3 in the NSIC while SCSU is 25-10 and 4-3 in league play.
Wayne State had the first scoring chance getting two hits and putting two runners on in the second but could not score.
St. Cloud State loaded the bases with no outs in the third thanks to a walk and pair of bunt singles. But Borngrebe got out of the jam with three straight strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.
In the fourth with two outs and no runners on base, Murphy belted a ball over the left field wall for what turned out to be the lone run of the contest.
The Huskies got two runners on in the sixth with just one out but two strikeouts to end the inning by Borngrebe kept WSC with a 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, SCSU got a one-out double and runner advanced to third on a wild pitch but the 'Cats ended the game with a flyout to hang on for the 1-0 win.
SCSU out-hit WSC in the game 6-3. Murphy's solo homer led WSC at the plate while Borngrebe doubled and
Lillie Timm singled.
Borngrebe fired her second straight shutout and fourth of the season to earn the win, now 11-5 on the season. She recorded 12 strikeouts with four walks while allowing six hits for the shutout win.
The second game made it to the bottom of the third inning with St. Cloud State leading 1-0 when the game was called due to rain.
Wayne State will be at home again Tuesday afternoon hosting Southwest Minnesota State in an NSIC doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
