WSC edges Montana State-Billings and Augustana to capture Wildcat Classic title

            Wayne State edged Montana State-Billings and Augustana to capture the Wildcat Classic Women's Golf Tournament played Monday and Tuesday at the Wayne Country Club.  The Wildcats shot rounds of 322 and 312 for a 36-hole team score of 634, two shots better than Montana State-Billings (325-211) at 636 and Augustana in third with a 638 (322-316).  It was the third tournament title this season for the Wildcats.
            After battling gusty winds and cold conditions Monday, teams were treated to a spectacular day of weather and improved scoring conditions Tuesday.  Minnesota State was fourth in the 14-team field at 644 followed by Winona State in fifth at 648.  The Wayne State B team finished 12th at 702 shooting scores of 355 and 347.
            Junior Saffire Sayre and senior Abbigail Brodersen each medaled for the Wildcats earning top six finishes.  Sayre fired back-to-back rounds of 77 for a 36-hole total of 154, placing second overall after falling on the first hole of a playoff to Augustana's Shannon McCormick.  Brodersen tied for third overall just two shots back at 156 after producing scores of 78 and 78.
            Freshman Camryn Johnson followed in a tie for 22nd place overall in a field of 77 players with 163 shooting rounds of 82 and 81.  Freshman Gaia Stancikova carded rounds of 87 and 77 for 164 and tied for 24th overall.  Her round of 77 Tuesday was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 fourth hole.  Sophomore Erica Lee fired scores of 85 and 80 for 165 to tie for 29th.
            The Wayne State B team was led by junior Meg Thompson placing in a tie for 35th overall with a 166 shooting rounds of 84 and 82.  Hailey Kenkel had rounds of 88 and 85 (173) and was 51stKylie Powers tied for 54th with a 175 (89-86) while sophomore Olivia Ottman shot consecutive rounds of 94 for a 188 and tied for 72 overall.
            Wayne State competes at the Northern Sun Conference Women's Golf Championships April 25-27 (Friday-Sunday) at Paradise Point Golf Club in Smithville, Missouri.
