Box Score 2 Sophomore pitcher
Kennadi Borngrebe fanned a career-high 14 batters and hit a two-run homer to lead Wayne State in a 12-1 win over Minnesota State Saturday afternoon to gain a split of a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader with the Mavericks in Mankato, Minnesota after the host team won the opener 4-2. WSC is now 31-11 on the season and 11-7 in the NSIC while MSU is 25-17 and 12-6 in conference play.
The opener saw the host Mavericks use three solo homers to help take down the Wildcats 4-2.
WSC opened the scoring in the first as
Jordyn Klein opened with a single and later scored on a MSU fielding error for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
Minnesota State then took the lead for good in the bottom of the second on three solo homers to take a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks added another run in the fourth to go in front 4-1 with WSC closing the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh for the final score of 4-2 as Klein reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an
Emilee Marth single to center field.
WSC had five hits in the game as Marth was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Klein singled and scored twice while
Haylee Weber and
Reagan Dreibelbis each added singles.
Starting pitcher
Taylor Coleman suffered the pitching loss (11-4), allowing four runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
Jadeyn Stahr worked the final 2 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on one hit.
The second game saw Borngrebe shine in the circle and was one of four Wildcat players to hit home runs as WSC gained a split of the twinbill with a 12-1 win. The sophomore from Elkhorn South had a career-best 14 K's and had a two-run homer at the plate while scoring twice.
After two innings of scoreless ball to start the game, WSC opened the scoring in the third when Klein tripled and scored on a
Leah Chance sacrifice fly.
Borngrebe belted a two-run homer in the fourth giving the 'Cats a 3-0 lead. In the fifth, WSC went ahead 4-0 when Klein doubled and scored on a
Maddie Scobee sacrifice fly.
A four-run sixth put the 'Cats ahead 8-0 as
Lillie Timm blasted a three-run homer to center field while
Emilee Marth had an RBI double scoring Chance (singled).
Minnesota State extended the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth and the 'Cats countered with four insurance runs in the top of the seventh for the 12-1 win. Coleman had a solo homer to start the scoring with Jorydn Rochholz added a three-run shot to center field to conclude the scoring.
Four of Wayne State's nine hits in the game were home runs. Klein was the lone Wildcat with a multi-hit game, going 3 for 4 with a single, double and triple with two runs scored. Rochholz and Timm each had three-run homers. Borngrebe had a two-run homer and scored twice with Coleman adding a homer and two runs scored.
In the circle Borngrebe fired her 11
th complete game in 17 starts, improving to 12-6 with the win. She allowed just three hits and one run with 14 strikeouts and three walks.
Wayne State hosts Sioux Falls Friday at 2 p.m. in an NSIC doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
