Schultz ties school record in pole vault with fifth place finish at Drake Relays

4/25/2026 12:15:00 PM

Junior pole vaulter Devon Schultz matched his own school record while the 4 x 200-meter relay team broke a school record dating back to World War II to lead the Wayne State men's track and field team competing at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa Friday and Saturday.
Schultz cleared 16' 3 ¼" to place fifth in a strong pole vault field, matching his own school record he set last Sunday at the Loper Invite in Kearney and his mark remains the top mark in the NSIC this season.
The Wildcat 4 x 200-meter relay team of Luke Klabenes, Osman Saeed, Austin Madsen and Alex Leuenberger broke a school record dating back to 1941 while placing 10th overall with a time of 1:26.80.  The old school record of 1:27.7 was set in 1941 by Warren Best, Lawrence Retzlaff, Jim Simpson and Burton Anderson.
Junior Cain Brown posted a fifth-place finish in the high jump clearing 6' 9 ¾".  Brown still has the top mark in the NSIC this season in the event clearing 6' 10 ¼" at the Emporia State Midwest Classic (4/3/26) and his 6' 9 ¾" mark at the Drake Relays ties for the second-best mark in the NSIC this season.
The 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of Saeed, Madsen, Leuenberger and Braylon Chism recorded a time of 3:14.04 to finish 11th at the Drake Relays and it is now the second-fastest time in the NSIC this season.
Wayne State will compete in a pair of meets next week as some members of the Wildcat team venture to Mankato Wednesday for the Maverick Open #1 while the rest of the team will be in Vermillion Friday and Saturday for the South Dakota Challenge.
