Anna Borner and
Reese Johnson from the Wayne State College beach volleyball team were named Tuesday morning to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District At-Large Team. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must maintain a 3.50 grade point average or higher and compete in 90 percent of the team's contests or must start in at least 66 percent of matches played.
The Women's At-Large Team consists of 11 sports – beach volleyball, bowling, crew/rowing, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle and skiing.
Borner, a sophomore from Waterloo (Douglas County West HS), recorded a 3.91 grade point average this season majoring in general biology. On the court, she played #1 pairing with
Taylor Bunjer and posted a 7-11 match record that included three-set wins over Oklahoma Wesleyan March 3
rd and against Erskine College April 19
th at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships in Alabama.
Johnson, a junior from Denver, Iowa (Denver HS), maintained a 3.78 grade point average majoring in business administration. On the court she teamed with
Mattie Kamery at the 3s pairing and recorded a 14-5 record this season with one of the highlighted wins coming over Nebraska's Laney Choboy and Skyler Pierce 21-17, 20-22, 17-15 on February 27
th in Lincoln. Johnson and Kamery also won four straight matches at the AVCA Small College Beach Championships to end the season in Alabama and was voted Most Outstanding Pairing in beach volleyball this season.
Wayne State finished the 2026 season with a winning record in beach volleyball for the fourth straight season, finishing at 12-8 overall.
