Late rally falls short as WSC softball drops two at Concordia-St. Paul

            The Wayne State College softball team nearly overcame a 10-run third inning by Concordia-St. Paul, but the Wildcat rally fell one run short in an 11-10 loss in the second game of Friday's Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader at Carlander Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The Wildcats fell in the opener 4-1 and are now 19-17 overall and 5-9 in league play while the host Golden Bears are 22-13 on the season and 7-5 in NSIC games.
            The first game saw Concordia-St. Paul pitcher Ashley Kluever limit the Wildcats to five hits while striking out 10 WSC batters as the 'Cats dropped a 4-1 decision to the Golden Bears.  Concordia took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but WSC scored in the top of the fifth inning to trim the lead to 2-1.  Kaiti Williams led off the inning with a single and later scored on Kelcie Bormann's RBI single to center field.  But Concordia-St. Paul increased their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning with two runs on a pair of hits and two Wildcat errors to put the game out of reach for WSC.
            WSC had five hits in the game, all singles, by Aeriell Earleywine, Dani Sandel, Vicki Nielsen, Williams and Bormann.  Freshman pitcher Sara Scheffert (8-7) suffered the pitching loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in a complete game effort with three strikeouts and two walks.
            The 'Cats nearly overcame a 10-run third inning by Concordia-St. Paul in the second game as WSC fell one run short in an 11-10 loss to the Golden Bears.  WSC held a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the third inning, but Concordia-St. Paul erupted for 10 runs on nine hits to take a commanding 10-2 lead.  But WSC scored three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and sixth and another run in the seventh before falling short by one run in an 11-10 loss.
            WSC outhit Concordia-St. Paul in the second game 14-13.  Aeriell Earleywine was 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI's and two runs scored to lead the 'Cats at the plate.  Kelcie Bormann, Dani Sandel and Brittany Greenwood each had two hits in the game while Kaiti Williams and Megan Hagemann added home runs in the loss.
            Bormann (3-4) was one of three WSC pitchers in the game and suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in two innings of work.  Stephanie Schmidt pitched one inning of relief while Jordan Harris worked the final three innings and gave up just one run on three hits with one strikeout and five walks.
            Wayne State will be on the road again Saturday visiting St. Cloud State in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
