Wayne State College remained unbeaten in Northern Sun Conference baseball play Wednesday afternoon with a 5-0 and 8-4 sweep over Bemidji State at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne. The Wildcats have now won six straight and 10 of their last 11 games to improve to 16-6 overall and 6-0 in league play while Bemidji State is now 11-11 on the season and 2-4 in the NSIC.
Sophomore starter
Michael Frericks held the Beavers to just three hits over six innings in the opener to lift the Wildcats in a 5-0 win.
WSC scored single runs in the second and third innings and added three insurance runs in the sixth to make the final score 5-0.
Brandon Lalk's two-run homer was the key hit in the sixth inning.
The Wildcats had seven hits while holding BSU to three in the win.
Justin Beranek finished 2 for 3 with an RBI while Lalk's homer was the lone extra base hit for WSC.
Blake Brisson singled to extend his hit streak to 14 games while
Tanner Lancaster,
Michael Herman and
CJ Nolen also had hits for WSC.
Frericks improved to 2-1 on the season with his stellar start. He gave up just three hits over six innings of work with five strikeouts and two walks. Senior
Trevor Reeves worked the seventh inning and had two strikeouts while preserving the shutout.
The second game saw eight different starters record hits as the Wildcats built an early 4-0 lead and went on to the 8-4 win. WSC took an early 3-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI triple from
Justin Beranek, an RBI double by
Michael Herman and a run-scoring single from
CJ Nolen.
Brett Keim's solo homer in the second gave WSC a 4-0 lead. Bemidji State scored one run in the third to make the score 4-1 and the score remained that way until the seventh inning when the Wildcats scored three runs to grab a 7-1 lead. Herman's two-run double was the big hit in the inning along with an RBI single by Nolen.
WSC made the score 8-1 in the eighth inning when
Alex Kreft doubled and scored on
Blake Brisson's single. Bemidji State plated three runs in the top of the ninth inning making the final score 8-4.
Wayne State had 12 hits in the game while BSU recorded 10. Herman led WSC at the plate with two doubles, going 2 for 4 with three RBI's. Kreft also doubled twice while going 2 for 4 with one run scored. Nolen finished 2 for 5 with a pair of singles and two RBI's while Brisson went 2 for 4 with a double and single.
Freshman lefthander
Curtis Bussard (1-1) picked up the pitching win, working the first five innings on the hill. He gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore
Nick Ragan pitched two innings and did not allow a run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior
Taylor MacDonell worked the final two innings and was charged with three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
Wayne State is scheduled to be on the road this weekend for a four-game NSIC series at the University of Sioux Falls with doubleheaders starting Saturday and Sunday at noon each day.
