Box Score Minnesota Duluth 4 Wayne State 2

Minnesota Duluth used three goals in a six and a half minute span in the first half to defeat Wayne State college in Northern Sun play at the WSC Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon.  Minnesota Duluth improves to 5-6 on the season with a 5-3 record in the NSIC, while Wayne State falls to 1-9-1 on the season, 0-8 in league play.
The match was a story of two halves, with a scoring bombardment in the first half and a defensive struggle in the second half.  Minnesota Duluth struck first with a goal by Maureen Stormont just two minutes into the game, her eighth goal on the season, with assists on the play from Megan Helberg and Jennifer Smith.  Five minutes later Josie Brown hit the equalizer for Wayne State, her second goal on the season off the cross from Kyhlie Hansen.  Just 22 seconds later the Bulldogs scored again, this time Jennifer Smith scored her first goal on the season off of the cross from Sheridan Reiners.  A short 48 seconds later Duluth scored again, with Stormont scoring her second goal of the match and her ninth of the season off of the assist from Marissa Ganske.  McKenzie Hallstrom capitalized on a penalty kick in the 37th minute to bring the score back to 3-2 Duluth.  However, Sheridan Reiners scored a late goal in the 83rd minute to extend the score to 4-2, and that's all that the Bulldogs needed to finish off the match.
The overall shots in the match were fairly equal with Duluth holding the slight advantage over Wayne State with 13 shots to the 'Cats 10.  The Bulldogs also had three corner kicks in the match to Wayne State's two, and the Wildcats were also whistled for eight fouls in the match to Minnesota Duluth's six.
Offensively for Wayne State, Josie Brown and McKenzie Hallstrom both scored their second goals on the season.  Mallory Hoyt, Josie Brown and Rachel Mabrey all had two shots for the Wildcats.
Freshman goalkeeper Margaret Harma had four saves for Wayne State in the loss, and now has a 1-9-1 record on the season.
The Wildcats will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting St. Cloud State in a 1 p.m. contest at the WSC Soccer Complex.
