WSC softball gets offensive in sweep over Northern State

            The Wayne State softball team hit four home runs, pounding out 28 hits while scoring 28 runs, to sweep Northern State 14-4 and 14-4 in Northern Sun Conference softball played Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  The Wildcats improve to 17-9 and 3-1 in the NSIC while the Wolves drop to 8-12 and 1-3 in league play.
            In the opener, Kelcie Bormann and Sam O'Brien each homered while Kylee Simpson went 3 for 3 at the plate to lead the Wildcats in a 14-4 win. 
            The 'Cats scored five runs in the first, highlighted by Kylee Simpson's three-run triple.  A six-run third inning was fueled by Bormann's three-run homer to right center field along with RBI singles from Jordan King, Megan Hagemann and Kaiti Williams.  Wayne State closed out the scoring in the fourth with two runs thanks to an RBI double from Lexie Loos and a single by Shelby Wobken.
            Wayne State had 15 hits in the win.  Simpson was a perfect 3 for 3 with a triple, three RBI's and two runs scored.  Bormann finished 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBI's while O'Brien was 2 for 3 with a homer and two runs scored.
            Junior Sara Scheffert (8-7) picked up the pitching win, giving up just one run on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
            The second game saw the Wildcats get home runs from O'Brien, Melanie Alyea and Kylee Simpson as WSC recorded another 14-4 win over the Wolves.
            Simpson connected for a two-run homer in the second for a 2-1 WSC lead.  A five-run third inning was highlighted by O'Brien's three-run blast to left center field followed by a Melanie Alyea solo shot.
            WSC put the game out of reach in the fourth inning with seven runs on five hits.  Melanie Alyea had a two-run double, Tiffani Housh a two-run single while Jordan King and Shelby Wobken contributed run-scoring singles in the inning.
            Kelcie Bormann was the winning pitcher, improving her season record to 9-1.  She gave up one run (unearned) on three hits with six strikeouts.
            Wayne State will be at home again on Sunday hosting MSU Moorhead in a noon doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
