Sara Scheffert fired a five-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts while
Monique Alyea and
Sam O'Brien homered for the Wildcats. The second game was canceled due to weather. WSC is now 27-10 on the season and 13-2 in league play while Minnesota Duluth is now 18-16 and 4-5 in the NSIC.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when freshman
Monique Alyea opened the inning with a solo homer to right center field for a 1-0 WSC lead.
The 'Cats added two more runs in the sixth when
Kelcie Bormann led off with a single and crossed the plate on
Sam O'Brien's home run over the center field fence for a 3-0 lead.
That's all the run support needed for Scheffert, who blanked the Bulldogs with 10 strikeouts and no walks while allowing just five hits in the win.
Offensively, WSC had nine hits in the contest with
Kylee Simpson going 2 for 3.
Kelcie Bormann was 2 for 4 while O'Brien and
Monique Alyea each homered.
Wayne State is scheduled to play a doubleheader at St. Cloud State on Sunday starting at noon.
