4/18/2014 6:44:00 PM

Game 1 - #12 Minnesota State 3 Wayne State 2

Game 2 - #12 Minnesota State 8 Wayne State 0 (5 inn.)

#12 Minnesota State topped Wayne State 3-2 and 8-0 featuring the top two teams in the Northern Sun Conference softball standings Friday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  WSC falls to 30-12 on the season and 16-4 in the NSIC while the visiting Mavericks move into first place in the league at 18-2 and 34-8 overall.
The first game saw MSU jump out to an early 3-0 lead, then hold off a Wildcat rally for a 3-2 win.
The Mavericks scored two runs in the first and one more in the second for the early lead, but WSC rallied with two runs in the fifth thanks to a two-out rally to make the score 3-2.
Megan Hagemann walked and scored on a Kaiti Williams double to center field.  Williams then scored on a Kelcie Bormann single to left field to pull the 'Cats within one.
WSC nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jordan King led off with a double to center field.  Catcher Megan Hagemann just missed a home run to left field on the next at bat that would have won the game, flying out to deep left field.  Kaiti Williams struck out and Bormann grounded out to end the game giving MSU the 3-2 win.
Both teams had six hits in the game.  King, Hagemann and Williams each doubled for WSC while Bormann, Monique Alyea and Kylee Simpson each singled.
Junior Sara Scheffert (14-8) suffered the pitching loss, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and four walks.
The second game saw Minnesota State take a 6-0 lead after three innings as the Mavericks blanked the Wildcats 8-0 in five innings.
MSU scored single runs in the first and second innings with four more in the third and two in the fifth while holding Wayne State to just two hits in the game.
Kaiti Williams singled in the first inning with Kelcie Bormann recording a fourth inning single.
Kelcie Bormann (16-3) was the losing pitcher in the second game, giving up five runs on six hits in two plus innings of work.  Sophomore Cassy Miller worked the final three innings and was charged with three runs on five hits.
Wayne State will host Concordia-St. Paul in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.
