Sam O'Brien went 4 for 6 at the plate with a homer and six RBI's while junior
Kelcie Bormann pitched nine innings allowing just one run to lead Wayne State College to a 9-1 and 9-1 NSIC softball sweep over Minnesota Crookston Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. WSC is now 22-10 overall and 8-2 in the NSIC while UMC drops to 2-17 on the season and 0-6 in league play.
In the opener, O'Brien went 2 for 3 with five RBI's to lead a balanced hitting attack as the Wildcats posted a 9-1 win in six innings over the Golden Eagles.
WSC scored two runs in the second thanks to run scoring singles from
Melanie Alyea and
Monique Alyea. The 'Cats scored five runs in the third highlighted by O'Brien's three run homer over the right field wall.
Kylee Simpson added an RBI single in the inning that featured five hits.
O'Brien then closed the scoring in the sixth inning with a two-run single that scored
Megan Hagemann and pinch-runner
Tiffani Housh as WSC won 9-1.
The 'Cats had 13 hits in the opener while holding UMC to four. O'Brien was 2 for 3 with five RBI's on a homer and single.
Kylee Simpson finished a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate while Hagemann,
Melanie Alyea and
Monique Alyea each contributed two hits in the win.
Bormann fired four innings of two-hit, scoreless ball in the first game to pick up the win. Sophomore reliever
Cassy Miller worked the final two innings and gave up two hits and one run (unearned) with two strikeouts.
The second game saw WSC score five runs in the first inning as the Wildcats cruised to another 9-1 win in six innings over Minnesota Crookston.
Kaiti Williams launched a two-run homer in the first followed by a two-run single from
Alyssa Schropp and an RBI single by
Alex Schmidt to lead the five-run, five hit effort in the first.
The second inning featured a run scoring single by O'Brien and a sacrifice fly by Williams to make the score 7-1 after two innings.
WSC added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings with Bormann's solo homer in the sixth ending the contest on the eight-run rule giving the Wildcats the 9-1 win and sweep over the Golden Eagles.
The second game saw WSC record 10 hits while holding UMC to just two. O'Brien was 2 for 3 with an RBI while Bormann was 2 for 4 with a homer.
Lexie Loos added two hits for the Wildcats while Williams finished with a two-run homer, going 1 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Bormann (12-2) collected another pitching win in the circle, allowing two hits and one run over five innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Miller pitched the final inning and retired all three batters with one strikeout.
Wayne State will be at home again Sunday entertaining Bemidji State on Alumni Appreciation Day at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex starting at 12 p.m.
