Game 1 - Wayne State 4 Southwest Minnesota State 0

Game 2 - Wayne State 3 Southwest Minnesota State 2

Junior pitcher Sara Scheffert fired a five-hit shutout in the opener and saved the second game with three scoreless innings of relief to lead the Wayne State College softball team in a 4-0 and 3-2 sweep over Southwest Minnesota State Wednesday afternoon in Marshall, Minnesota.  The Wildcats are now 26-10 on the season and 12-2 in league play with the Mustangs falling to 7-22-1 overall and 4-9-1 in the NSIC.
In the opener, junior Sara Scheffert fired a five-hit shutout while WSC made the most of nine singles to pick up a 4-0 win over the Mustangs.
WSC opened the scoring in the second inning when Sam O'Brien walked and scored on a Kylee Simpson single to left field for a 1-0 lead.
The 'Cats added two runs in the fifth thanks to a two-out rally.  Lexie Loos walked with Megan Hagemann and Kaiti Williams each recording infield singles to shortstop to load the bases with Kelcie Bormann delivering a two-run single that scored Loos and Hagemann for a 3-0 advantage.
WSC added another run in the sixth inning when Melanie Alyea singled and pinch-runner Michelle Thille scoring on a pinch-hit single from Shelby Wobken to close out the scoring.
WSC had nine hits in the game, all singles, compared to five by SMSU.  Melanie Alyea was 2 for 3 while Hagemann was 2 for 4 with one run scored.  Williams, Bormann, Monique Alyea, Simpson and Wobken also had hits for the Wildcats.
Scheffert was stellar in the circle to earn the pitching win, allowing five hits and no runs with five strikeouts and one walk for her first shutout of the season.
The second game saw the Wildcats build a 3-0 lead, then overcome two errors that led to two unearned runs for the Mustangs, as WSC held on for a 3-2 win.
WSC scored all three runs in the third inning thanks to a two-out rally and no runners on base.  Lexie Loos walked, Jordan King reached first on a third strike wild pitch and both players scored on a Kaiti Williams double down the left field line.  Williams then scored on a Kelcie Bormann single to center to make it 3-0 WSC.
The Mustangs scored two runs on just one hit and two Wildcat errors in the fourth to chase starter Kelcie Bormann, but reliever Sara Scheffert shut the door on SMSU the rest of the way and worked three scoreless innings of relief to get the save and help WSC earn the sweep.
Wayne State had six hits in the contest to four by SMSU.  Loos was 2 for 3 with a run scored followed by Williams with a double and two RBI's.  Bormann added an RBI single while Kylee Simpson and Sam O'Brien each had singles.
Bormann (15-2) earned the pitching win with Scheffert notching her first save of the season.  Bormann worked four innings and was charged with two runs (both unearned) on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.  Scheffert pitched the final three innings and gave up two hits with three strikeouts.
Wayne State is scheduled to be on the road this weekend, playing at Minnesota Duluth Saturday at 12 p.m. and St. Cloud State Sunday at 12 p.m.
