            #9 Wayne State College used a season-high 18 kills from senior outside hitter Katie Hughes and 10 kills and three blocks from junior Alyssa Frauendorfer to sweep #5 Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played in Duluth, Minnesota.  Scores of the match were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-23.  WSC improves to 17-3 and 9-2 in the NSIC while UMD falls to 15-5 and 8-3 in league play.
            The first set was tied at 13-13, but WSC took control scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 20-14 lead as the Wildcats finished with a 25-21 set win.
            A similar scoring surge by the Wildcats in the second set helped WSC pull away for another 25-21 set win.  With the score tied at 10-10, WSC used back to back kills from Alex Opperman to cap a 6-1 run as the 'Cats took a 16-11 lead to force a UMD timeout. 
            The Bulldogs rallied and got within one at 21-20, but WSC got back to back kills from Katie Hughes and a UMD ball handling error to take a 24-20 lead before finishing with the 25-21 win.
            The third set was a battle featuring 12 ties and four lead changes with neither team leading by more than three points.  WSC forced seven attack errors on UMD and got a kill from Hughes on match point to give WSC the 25-23 win.
            Wayne State hit .256 in the match compared to .219 by UMD.  The 'Cats had 46 kills, 13 errors and 129 attacks while the Bulldogs had 48 kills with 20 errors and 128 attacks.
            UMD had 10 more digs than WSC, 64-54, while both teams had six blocks.  Wayne State had five service aces while holding the Bulldogs to none.
            Hughes recorded a season-high in kills for the second straight night to lead the Wildcats, pounding out 18 kills including eight in the final set.  Frauendorfer added 10 while Michaela Mestl and Alex Opperman each produced six.
            Mestl led the Wildcats in digs with 15 and had four of Wayne State's five aces while senior libero Courtney VanGroningen contributed 12 digs.  Senior setter Leisa McClintock accounted for 39 set assists.
            Wayne State will play at #20 Augustana University Tuesday evening in a 7 p.m. match.
