Box Score Southeastern Oklahoma State 8 Wayne State 3 The Wayne State College softball team dropped their 2016 season opener 8-3 to Southeastern Oklahoma State Friday afternoon at the Arkansas Monticello 8-State Classic held in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Storm improved to 3-4 with the win while the Wildcats fall to 0-1 on the season.
WSC opened the scoring in the first as senior
Lexie Loos doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Morgan Hoeg. But Southeastern Oklahoma State plated two runs in the second and single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead.
The Wildcats responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a run-scoring single from Hoeg and an RBI double by
Melanie Alyea.
But the Storm scored three insurance runs in the top of the seventh for the 8-3 win.
Southeastern Oklahoma held an 11-6 advantage in hits over the Wildcats. Loos was 3 for 4 with a double, two singles and two runs scored to lead WSC.
Rachel Shumaker and
Melanie Alyea each had doubles while Hoeg singled.
Senior
Cassy Miller suffered the pitching loss, charged with three runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings, walking four and striking out four. Freshman
Riley VanderVeen worked 3 1/3 innings and was tagged for five runs on four hits with two walks.
Wayne State will face Southern Arkansas Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the 8-State Classic in Arkansas.
