Box Score 2 Game 1 - Wayne State 9 Sioux Falls 1 (5 inn.)Game 2 - Wayne State 9 Sioux Falls 1 (5 inn.) Wayne State College used a nine-run third inning in the opener and a nine-run fourth inning in the second game to power the Wildcats in a pair of 9-1 five inning victories over the University of Sioux Falls Tuesday afternoon in Northern Sun Conference softball played at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. The surging Wildcats, winners of 11 of their last 12, improve to 21-18 overall and 16-4 in the NSIC while the Cougars fall to 28-15 and 12-8 in league play.
The opener saw the Wildcats erupt for nine runs on nine hits in the third inning, highlighted by three home runs, to carry Wayne State in a 9-1 win.
Katelyn Wobken opened the scoring with a two-run homer followed by a solo blast from
Emily Chandler. Three batters later, senior shortstop
Sam O'Brien joined the home run parade with a three-run shot that scored
Melanie Alyea (walk) and
Abbie Hix (single). Wobken added an RBI double and Chandler contributed an RBI single to close out the big inning for the Wildcats.
That would be plenty of run support for starter
Cassy Miller, who fired a complete game three-hitter allowing just one run with six strikeouts to earn the pitching victory.
WSC had nine hits in the win, led by
Katelyn Wobken going 2 for 2 with a homer, double and three RBI. Chandler finished 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBI. O'Brien homered and had three RBI while Fehringer doubled for WSC.
The second game saw WSC produce another nine-run inning, this time in the fourth inning, to post another 9-1 victory in five innings over the Cougars.
WSC had eight hits in the inning with Chandler starting the scoring with a solo homer to left center field.
Melanie Alyea added a two-run double with
Morgan Hoeg belting an RBI double in the inning. Other key hits in the inning included RBI singles by
Sam O'Brien and
Caitlin Fehringer.
Miller was the beneficiary of the run support, pitching four of the five innings to get the win. She gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Senior
Shelby Wobken worked one inning of perfect relief.
Wayne State ended the second game with nine hits as Alyea was 2 for 2 with a double and two RBI's. Chandler homered while Hoeg added a double. Rounding out Wildcat hitters were Loos, Hix, O'Brien,
Alyssa Schropp and Fehringer with a single each.
Wayne State will travel to Topeka, Kansas Thursday afternoon for a non-conference twinbill at Washburn University starting at 2 p.m.
