The opener saw the Wildcats hold off a ferocious seventh inning rally by the host Huskies, who scored four runs in the final frame, before WSC held on for the 6-5 win.
WSC took a 3-0 lead in the third following a two-run single by
Emily Chandler that scored
Lexie Loos (single) and
Morgan Hoeg (single) with the final run of the inning coming on a
Sam O'Brien ground out that brought home
Katelyn Wobken (single).
The 'Cats took a 5-0 lead in the fifth with two more runs as Chandler belted a two run homer to center field that brought home
Katelyn Wobken (single).
SCSU scored in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 5-1, but WSC added what proved to be a much needed insurance run in the top of the seventh when Loos scored on a
Abbie Hix sacrifice fly giving the 'Cats a 6-1 lead.
The Huskies rallied in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out grand slam to make the score 6-5, but senior starter
Cassy Miller then got SCSU cleanup hitter Alyssa Coletto to line out to second to end the game as the Wildcats held on for the 6-5 win.
Both teams had nine hits in the game. Loos finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored followed by Chandler going 2 for 2 with a homer and four RBI.
Katelyn Wobken also had two hits, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Hoeg and
Caitlin Fehringer each added a single.
Miller (18-13) pitched all seven innings to earn the win, allowing five runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.
The second game saw Miller fire 7 2/3 innings of scoreless relief as WSC rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh then win it with two runs in the 11
th for a thrilling 5-3 victory over the Huskies to complete the sweep.
WSC took a 2-0 lead in the first as Wobken tripled and scored on a single by Hix followed by an RBI double by
Sam O'Brien for an early Wildcat advantage.
SCSU scored one run in the second and two more in the fourth for a 3-2 lead and the score remained that way until the seventh when Loos singled and scored on O'Brien's single to even the score at 3-3.
After three scoreless extra innings, WSC came through with two runs in the top of the 11
th to take a 5-3 lead.
Rachel Shumaker led off the inning with a single and scored on Wobken's single while Hix had an RBI ground out that brought home Loos (single) with the other run.
Miller then retired the Huskies in order in the 11
th to seal the 5-3 extra inning win.
WSC had 15 hits in the win, pace by O'Brien who was 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI. Hix finished 3 for 6 with two RBI while Shumaker ended 3 for 5 with a run scored. Loos added two singles and two runs scored while Wobken was 2 for 6 with a triple and RBI.
Miller was stellar in relief of starter
Shelby Wobken to record another pitching win. Wobken worked the first 3 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on six hits. But Miller, now 19-13, limited the Huskies to just three hits and no runs over the final 7 2/3 innings with eight more strikeouts and just one walk to earn the victory.
The Wildcats will be on the road again Tuesday afternoon visiting fourth place Upper Iowa (31-13, 17-5 NSIC) in a key NSIC doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. in Fayette, Iowa.
