Cassy Miller fired a complete game win in the opener while three Wildcat pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout in the second game to lead the Wildcats in an 11-2 and 3-0 Northern Sun Conference softball sweep over Northern State Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne. WSC is now 12-17 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC while NSU drops to 12-20 and 2-6 in league play.
In the opener, WSC pulled away late scoring four runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth for an 11-2 win over the Wolves.
Leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, WSC used two-run singles from
Katelyn Wobken and
Melanie Alyea to take a 6-1 lead.
After Northern State scored in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 6-2, WSC used a two-run single from Wobken and a three-run homer by freshman
Emily Chandler to end the game with an 11-2 win in five innings.
WSC had 12 hits in the win.
Morgan Hoeg was a perfect 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Wobken ended 2 for 4 with four RBI and two runs scored while Chander was 2 for 4 with three RBI.
Lexie Loos,
Melanie Alyea,
Sam O'Brien,
Alyssa Schropp and
Caitlin Fehringer each added one hit for the Wildcats.
Miller improved to 8-12 on the season with the win. She gave up six hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and three walks in five innings of work.
The second game saw Miller,
Shelby Wobken and
Sarah Macias combine on a four hit shutout leading the Wildcats to a 3-0 win to complete the sweep.
WSC scored in the first on a
Melanie Alyea RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Another Alyea run scoring single in the third brought home Loos for a 2-0 lead and the 'Cats closed out the scoring in the fourth on a
Sam O'Brien solo homer into the wind over the right field fence for a 3-0 win.
The Wildcats had nine hits in the contest. Loos was 3 for 4 with a run scored.
Melanie Alyea was 2 for 3 with two RBI while O'Brien finished 2 for 3 with a homer. Schropp and Fehringer also had hits for WSC.
Shelby Wobken (3-2) earned the pitching win with four shutout innings of relief, allowing just four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Miller worked the opening two innings and did not allow a hit while walking two and striking out three.
Sarah Macias retired all three batters in the seventh to earn her second save of the season.
The Wildcats will be at home again Sunday host MSU Moorhead in a noon doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.
