Minnesota State held off Wayne State 5-4 in 10 innings in the opener and no-hit the Wildcats in the second game for a 9-0 win to post a Northern Sun Conference softball sweep Saturday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  WSC drops to 25-24 on the year and 19-9 in the NSIC while the NSIC leading Mavericks are now 39-12 and 22-5 in league play.
The opener saw WSC score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4 to force extra innings, then left the bases loaded with no one out in the bottom of the 10th to suffer a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in 10 innings.
Minnesota State scored single runs in the first and second for a 2-0 lead.  WSC made the score 2-1 in the fourth on Emily Chandler's solo homer.
After MSU produced single runs in the fifth and seventh innings for a 4-2 lead, WSC knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.  Morgan Hoeg doubled and scored on Katelyn Wobken's single to cut the MSU lead to 4-3 while Lexie Loos (single) scored on a Maverick throwing error.
WSC then had a chance to win the game in the seventh loading the bases with just one out, but Abbie Hix struck out and Sam O'Brien grounded out to leave the bases loaded.
Minnesota State's Ashley Tell hit a leadoff homer in the 10th for a 5-4 MSU lead.  WSC loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th when O'Brien reached on an error, Alyssa Schropp walked and Caitlin Fehringer singled to shortstop.  But MSU starter Coley Ries got three straight outs to get out of the jam giving the Mavericks the 5-4 win.
WSC had nine hits in the contest, led by Loos going 3 for 6 with two runs scored.  The senior from Millard North broke her own school record for runs scored in a season (54) and is now tied with Amy Sandstrom (2007-10) for the career record in runs scored with 154.  Chandler finished 2 for 4 with a homer while Hoeg doubled.
Cassy Miller (19-15) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing five runs on 11 hits over 9 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.  Senior Sarah Macias worked the final 2/3 innings and gave up one hit.
The second game saw Minnesota State sophomore Libby Bemis throw a no-hitter against the Wildcats as Minnesota State completed the sweep with a 9-0 win in five innings.
