WSC completes weekend sweep with wins over MSU Moorhead

            Wayne State used a three-hit shutout and 12 strikeouts from Cassy Miller in the opener and a six-run sixth inning in the second game to sweep MSU Moorhead 1-0 and 7-1 in Northern Sun Conference softball played Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.   WSC is now 14-17 and 9-3 in league play with MSUM now 8-18 and 1-9 in the NSIC.
           The first game was a pitcher's battle between Miller and MSUM's Morgan Nybo.  The lone run of the game was scored in the fifth inning when Caitlin Fehringer doubled and scored on a bases loaded walk to Melanie Alyea.
            WSC had five hits in the game to three for MSU Moorhead.  Fehringer finished 2 for 3 with a double and single.  Emily Chandler, Melanie Alyea and Abbie Hix each singled.
            Miller (9-12) was superb in the pitching circle to collect the win for the Wildcats, allowing just three hits and no runs with 12 strikeouts and just one walk.
            The second game saw Wayne State erupt for six runs on seven hits in the sixth inning to complete the sweep with a 7-1 win over the Dragons.
            MSU Moorhead opened the scoring with a run in the third, but WSC responded with a run in the bottom of the third when Loos singled and scored on a Katleyn Wobken triple.
            Wayne State's six-run sixth was highlighted by a two-run double from Katelyn Wobken, a two-run single by Emily Chandler and an RBI single by Morgan Hoeg.
            WSC had 12 hits in the win while holding MSUM to five.  Loos was 3 for 4 with two runs scored followed by Katelyn Wobken going 2 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBI's.  Hoeg added two hits including a double while Melanie Alyea doubled.
            Miller (10-12) worked 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief to pick up the pitching win, striking out four.  Shelby Wobken started the game and worked 3 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and one run.
            Wayne State will be on the road Wednesday visiting Southwest Minnesota State for a 2 p.m. NSIC doubleheader.
