Game 1 - Wayne State 8 Southwest Minnesota State 2Game 2 - Southwest Minnesota State 6 Wayne State 3 Four Wayne State errors led to five unearned runs by Southwest Minnesota State in the second game keeping the Wildcats from recording a sweep in Northern Sun Conference softball Tuesday afternoon at Mustang Field in Marshall, Minnesota. WSC won the opener 8-2 but dropped the second contest to the Mustangs 6-3 despite holding a 12-4 advantage in hits. Wayne State is now 15-18 overall and 10-4 in the NSIC while Southwest Minnesota State is now 11-20 and 7-7 in league play.
The first game saw the Wildcats break open a close game with a five-run fifth inning as Wayne State recorded an 8-2 win.
Lexie Loos and
Emily Chandler helped produce a 2-0 Wildcat lead after three innings of play. Loos led off the game with a single and scored on a Chandler double for the first run of the contest while Loos doubled in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chandler for a 2-0 lead in the third.
WSC broke the game open banging out eight hits to score five runs in the fifth. Key hits in the inning were a two-run single from
Katelyn Wobken, a two-run double by
Melanie Alyea and a RBI single from
Alyssa Schropp.
The 'Cats scored again in the seventh for an 8-0 lead when
Sam O'Brien singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jalyn Zeiss.
Starter
Cassy Miller worked six shutout innings to start the game, then came back on in relief of
Sarah Macias in the seventh and got the final two outs to clinch the 8-2 win.
WSC had 14 hits in the win, led by Chandler who was 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Loos finished 2 for 5 with a double, single and three runs scored.
Katelyn Wobken went 2 for 3 with two RBI's while
Caitlin Fehringer added two hits in the win.
Miller improved to 11-12 on the season with the win, pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings allowing just five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Errors cost the Wildcats in the second game as four Wildcat errors resulted in five unearned runs scored by Southwest Minnesota State as the Mustangs avoided the sweep with a 6-3 win over Wayne State.
WSC scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings while SMSU produced two-run innings in the second, fourth and sixth for the win.
Wayne State held a 12-4 advantage in hits over the Mustangs. Loos was a perfect 4 for 4 with two runs scored followed by Chandler going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.
Morgan Hoeg was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles while
Melanie Alyea,
Sam O'Brien,
Monique Alyea and
Abbie Hix each recorded one hit.
Miller (11-13) was tagged with the pitching loss, allowing just two hits over 4 2/3 innings. She was charged with four runs, three unearned, with one strikeout. Starter
Shelby Wobken pitched the opening 1 1/3 innings and allowed two runs (both unearned) on two hits.
Wayne State will be at home this weekend for a pair of NSIC doubleheaders, hosting Minnesota Crookston Saturday and Bemidji State Sunday starting at noon each day.
