Miller's no-hitter highlights WSC softball sweep over Minnesota Crookston

           Wayne State senior Cassy Miller recorded her first career no-hitter to help Wayne State College in a 13-0 and 12-10 Northern Sun Conference softball sweep over Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. The Wildcats improved to 12-4 in the league and 17-18 overall while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-13 in the league and 7-27 overall.
            In the first game, Wildcat senior Cassy Miller recorded her first career no-hitter to lead the Wildcats to a 13-0 five inning win over the Golden Eagles.
            WSC opened the scoring in the first inning with back-to-back home runs from Katelyn Wobken and Emily Chandler for a 2-0 lead.
            The Wildcats extended their lead to 10-0 with an eight run second inning. Key hits in the inning included a two RBI triple by Lexie Loos and a grand slam from Alyssa Schropp.
            The 'Cats added another run in the third on a Abbie Hix RBI single and closed out the scoring with two runs in the fourth thanks to a pinch hit two run double by Brooke French.
            Miller carried a perfect game into the fifth inning until giving up a two out walk. The senior from Wakefield (Wayne HS) recorded six strikeouts while issuing the lone walk to complete the no hitter.
            WSC had 13 hits in the win. Schropp led the team going 2-3 with four RBI's and a grand slam. Loos was also 2-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Melanie Alyea went 2-2 with one run scored.
            Katelyn Wobken added a homer while French and Morgan Hoeg contributed doubles in the win.
            In the second game, the Wildcats held off a late rally from the Golden Eagles to hold onto a 12-10 slugfest win.
            Trailing 2-0 after the first inning, WSC erupted for six runs in the second inning to take a 6-2 lead. Key hits in the inning included a two RBI double by Schropp and a three RBI double from Emily Chandler.
            In the fifth inning, the Wildcats capitalized on two Golden Eagle errors to extend their lead to 12-5. Four Wildcats recorded a hit in the inning – Emily Chandler, Melanie Alyea, Shelby Wobken and Morgan Hoeg.
            The Golden Eagles trimmed the seven run lead to two in the last two innings, but fell short in completing the rally.
            Starter Shelby Wobken was credited with the win, improving her record to 4-2. Wobken recorded two strikeouts while pitching three innings.
            Senior relief specialist Sarah Macias pitched the last inning to record her third save of the season.
            WSC pounded out 14 hits in the win. Chandler was 3-4 with a double and a team high four RBI's. Melanie Alyea was also 3-4 with two runs scored. Loos and Shelby Wobken each added two hits while Katelyn Wobken homered and scored twice. Sam O'Brien, Schropp and Hoeg each recorded doubles.
            Wayne State will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting Bemidji State in a NSIC doubleheader starting at noon.
