Wayne State College fell to Washburn 5-0 Sunday afternoon in the Wildcats' opening game on the second day of the Arkansas Monticello Tournament in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Wildcats dropped to 1-2 on the year with the loss while the Lady Ichabods improved to 4-7.
The Wildcats had at least one runner reach base every inning, leaving nine runners left on base. But WSC could never get an extra hit to keep an inning alive against the Ichabods.
Washburn scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning off three hits and one walk for a 3-0 lead.
Two more runs in the fifth inning by Washburn closed out the scoring in a 5-0 win.
Both teams had six hits in the contest. Sophomores
Kortney Buresh and
Kim Vidlak each went 2 for 4 with a double and single.
Ashley Hernandez doubled while
Michaela Smith added a single.
Freshman
Sloan Cooksey (0-2) suffered the pitching loss, allowing five runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Junior
Maddie Moser worked the final 1 2/3 innings and did not allow a hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Wayne State will close out play at the Arkansas Monticello Tournament Sunday afternoon with a game against Harding (Ark.).
