Wayne State got the tying run on second base with two outs in the seventh inning before falling just short in a 6-4 loss to Dominican College of New York Sunday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Auburndale, Florida. The Lady Chargers improve to 2-2 on the year while sending Wayne State to its ninth straight loss and a 5-12 overall record.
Dominican College got off to a quick start, scoring four runs in the first inning on just one hit while taking advantage of two Wildcat errors for an early 4-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the top of the sixth inning when the Wildcats got on the scoreboard with a solo homer from
Ashley Hernandez to cut the Chargers lead to 4-1.
Dominican then answered with what turned out to be a pair of big runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two unearned runs to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh inning.
Wayne State mounted a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs before leaving the tying run on second base with two outs before falling 6-4.
Molli Vasa started the rally reaching on a Dominican error and later scored on a
Kortney Buresh RBI single for the first Wildcat run.
Emily Hale singled and scored on a bases loaded walk to Hernandez to trim the lead to 6-3.
Buresh later scored on a Lady Chargers throwing error to make the score 6-4 and the Wildcats had runners on second and third with two outs when the rally ended on a flyout to right field to end the game as Dominican College held on for the 6-4 win.
Wayne State held a 9-4 advantage in hits over Dominican College. Buresh was 2 for 4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Hale ended 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and run scored while
Kim Vidlak was 2 for 4. Hernandez added a solo homer to go with two RBI while
Clare Reinhart and
Paiton Tornberg each singled.
Freshman starter
Hadley Chvatal (2-2) suffered the pitching loss, allowing four runs in the opening frame. Freshman
Sloan Cooksey worked five innings of relief and gave up just two runs (both unearned) on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Wayne State will play two more games Monday at the NTC Spring Games in Florida, battling Ferris State of Michigan at 1:45 p.m. and Edinboro (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
